Pregnancy Home > PremesisRx and Breastfeeding

If you are taking PremesisRx and breastfeeding at the same time, you may want to talk to your healthcare provider about taking a different prenatal vitamin. Although PremesisRx is safe to take while breastfeeding, it probably isn't the best prenatal vitamin to take during this time because it does not contain many of the vitamins and minerals that may be beneficial when breastfeeding.

An Overview of PremesisRx and Breastfeeding

PremesisRx® is a prescription prenatal vitamin. While prenatal vitamins are safe for use during breastfeeding, this particular one is probably not the best prenatal vitamin for use during breastfeeding.
(PremesisRx is no longer being manufactured and should no longer be sold in the United States. Please consult your healthcare provider for further information.)

PremesisRx and Breastfeeding: What Does the Research Say?

Research has suggested that many vitamins and minerals pass through breast milk. However, this is usually a very good thing. For an infant that is exclusively breastfed, breast milk is the only source of vitamins and minerals. Keep in mind that it is not a good idea to take too much of any particular vitamin and mineral, so you should not take any additional vitamins and minerals (unless you have your healthcare provider's approval).
However, PremesisRx contains just the bare essentials; it does not contain all the vitamins and minerals usually found in prenatal vitamins. This is done on purpose, because PremesisRx is designed to help women with morning sickness (and because many vitamins and minerals can make morning sickness worse). Usually, women who are breastfeeding do not experience morning sickness, and a more complete prenatal vitamin would be a better choice.

Talking With Your Healthcare Provider About PremesisRx and Breastfeeding

You should talk with your healthcare provider about PremesisRx and breastfeeding. Each woman's situation is different, and you and your healthcare provider understand your situation best. After considering what you want and expect, as well as your current health situation, you and your healthcare provider can make a shared decision about PremesisRx and breastfeeding in your particular situation. In general, PremesisRx is considered to be safe (and actually beneficial) for breastfeeding women and their infants.
