What Is Prenate Mini?

Prenate Mini™ is a prenatal vitamin in the Prenate brand of vitamins. It is only available with a prescription. Like other prenatal vitamins, Prenate Mini contains vitamins and minerals necessary for a healthy pregnancy. However, it comes as a small gel capsule that may be easier to swallow than most other prenatal vitamins.

Other multivitamins in the Prenate family include Prenate Essential®, Prenate Elite®, and Prenate DHA®. Like other Prenate vitamins, Prenate Mini contains Quatrefolic®, an active form of folate. It also contains docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), a nutrient that is important for eye and brain development, and blueberry extract to provide antioxidants.

How Does Prenate Mini Work?

Prenate Mini contains 13 different vitamins, minerals, and fatty acids. These nutrients are important for a healthy pregnancy, and many pregnant women may not get enough of these nutrients for a variety of reasons.

Probably most importantly, Prenate Mini contains folate, which is added to prenatal vitamins to prevent birth defects such as spina bifida. Specifically, Prenate Mini contains two kinds of folate: 400 mg of folic acid, which is converted in the body into folate, and 1.1 mg of Quatrefolic.

Quatrefolic is a new form of folate, known scientifically as (6S)-5-methyltetrahydrofolate glucosamine salt. Quatrefolic is already in an active form, and does not need to be converted by the body. Quatrefolic 1.1 mg is approximately equal to 600 mcg of folic acid, which means Prenate Mini contains the equivalent of a total of 1 mg of folic acid.

Prenate Mini also contains DHA, an omega-3 fatty acid. DHA provides a wide variety of health benefits. There is some evidence that it may decrease the risk of preterm birth (having a baby prematurely), improve brain function, and improve vision.

Fish are the main source of DHA, and the typical American diet is usually deficient in DHA. In addition, because many pregnant women are instructed to limit their intake of certain fish due to the potential risks of mercury toxicity, it is likely that many pregnant women are not getting enough DHA.

Finally, unlike most prenatal vitamins, Prenate Mini contains blueberry extract, which may provide antioxidant properties. Antioxidants may help prevent cell and tissue damage that contribute to chronic diseases.
