Prenate Essential and Breastfeeding
Prenatal vitamins, including Prenate Essential, are often recommended for use in women who are breastfeeding. Prenate Essential contains important vitamins and minerals that pass through the breast milk and supply the nursing baby with beneficial nutrition. However, you should talk to your healthcare provider before taking any other supplements in addition to Prenate Essential.
Can Breastfeeding Women Take Prenate Essential? Not only are Prenate® Essential vitamins safe for use while breastfeeding, prenatal vitamins such as this one are often recommended for use in women who are nursing. This is because breastfeeding is a time of increased nutritional need, and it may be difficult to get all of the necessary vitamins and minerals from food alone.
What Does the Research Say?Many of the vitamins and minerals found in Prenate Essential pass through breast milk. However, this is usually a beneficial thing. Milk is the only source of vitamins and minerals for infants who are exclusively breastfed.
It is not a good idea to take too much of any particular vitamin or mineral, however. So make sure you have your healthcare provider's approval before taking additional supplements, vitamins, or minerals.
Keep in mind, however, that prenatal vitamins usually do not contain enough calcium for most women. Prenate Essential only contains 145 mg of calcium. It is generally recommended that women who are nursing consume 1000 mg of calcium each day. Therefore, make sure to drink milk, eat calcium-rich foods, and take a calcium supplement in addition to your prenatal vitamin.
Talking With Your Healthcare ProviderYou should discuss breastfeeding and Prenate Essential use with your healthcare provider. Each woman's situation is different, and you and your healthcare provider understand your situation best. After considering what you want and expect, as well as your current health situation, the two of you can make a shared decision that is right for you.
