Over-the-Counter Prenatal Vitamins (Cont.)

Over-the-Counter Prenatal Vitamins: The Bottom Line

For most women, a good over-the-counter prenatal vitamin is probably just as beneficial as a good prescription prenatal vitamin. It is important to understand that prenatal vitamins (both over-the-counter and prescription) do not require FDA approval. In the past, both prescription and over-the-counter prenatal vitamins have had problems (mostly problems with dissolving adequately). What is most important is that you choose a prenatal vitamin from a manufacturer that you trust. Your healthcare provider and pharmacist can help you choose a reputable over-the-counter prenatal vitamin.

Over-the-counter prenatal vitamins can be especially useful for women who are trying to get pregnant or who are in the early stages of pregnancy (before they have had a chance to see their healthcare provider), as no prescription is necessary.
