Prepidil Medication Information

Prepidil® (dinoprostone vaginal gel) is a medicine prescribed to help prepare a woman's cervix for childbirth. This product is used to help thin and soften a woman's cervix that has not effectively "ripened" for delivery.

This medicine comes in the form of a gel that is injected into the cervix by a healthcare provider at or near the time of delivery. If needed, a second dose can be given six hours after the first dose.

Before receiving Prepidil, your healthcare provider needs information on your medical history and any other medications you are taking. There are certain circumstances in which a woman should not receive this vaginal gel, such as if she has had unexplained vaginal bleeding during her pregnancy or had a difficult labor and delivery in the past.
