Lesson of the Week: Preeclampsia

Mothers should familiarize themselves with preeclampsia signs and symptoms. Preeclampsia is a dangerous condition that causes high blood pressure and protein in the urine; it may affect both the mother and the fetus during the second trimester and/or third trimester. Preeclampsia symptoms include:

  • Severe headache
  • Seeing "spots" or "flashing lights" while at rest
  • Sudden increase in swelling, especially in the face
  • Stomach pain
  • Nausea, vomiting, and feeling "sick."

If you experience any of these possible symptoms of preeclampsia, you should contact your doctor immediately. Preeclampsia can lead to eclampsia, which can cause seizures, coma, or even maternal or fetal death.
