Lesson of the Week: Vitamins and Supplements to Take While Pregnant

At your first prenatal appointment, your healthcare provider should have given you a prescription for prenatal vitamins. Pregnant moms should take these vitamins in addition to eating a healthy diet. This will ensure that the baby gets additional vitamins and minerals necessary for its growth and development. These vitamins and minerals include such things as:
 
Talk with your healthcare provider or pharmacist about the best way to take your vitamins and whether they should be taken with food or beverages. In some cases, taking your vitamins incorrectly can inhibit the absorption of the vitamins and minerals that your baby needs. Make sure not to take your prenatal vitamin with foods containing calcium -- calcium can interfere with the body's ability to absorb iron.
