12 Weeks Pregnant (Cont.)

Changes in Your Body When You're 12 Weeks Pregnant

Around week 12 of pregnancy, there is an increase in blood volume, which brings more blood to the blood vessels. This increase in blood volume and the pregnancy hormone hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) work together to increase oil gland secretions, which results in a flushed, plumper, and smoother skin appearance.

The "pregnancy glow" does not happen for everyone, and the increased oil gland secretion can cause temporary acne. During week 12, your uterus will shift up and forward as it grows, which means that it won't be pressing on your bladder and your bathroom visits will be less frequent -- for now.

At 12 weeks pregnant, other changes you notice may include:

  • A decrease in morning sickness
  • An increase in energy levels
  • Headaches and lightheadedness due to the increase in blood volume or lack of protein.
