Can You Get Pregnant Without Having Sex?
To get started, let's talk about how pregnancy occurs. For pregnancy to occur, the sperm, which are in the semen, must enter the vagina and travel up through the cervix, through the uterus, to the fallopian tube and meet up with the egg. Once this happens, the sperm must fertilize the egg, and the resulting "blastocyst" must travel down the fallopian tube and implant in the uterus.
A woman can become pregnant any time semen (from either ejaculation or pre-ejaculation) comes in contact with the vaginal area. Obviously, semen can come in contact with the vagina from vaginal sex. But there are other ways that semen may come in contact with the vagina without having vaginal intercourse. This includes:
- Oral Sex
- Anal sex
- Mutual masturbation.
While the chances for getting pregnant without having sex are not very high, it is still possible. For pregnancy to occur without penetration, any sperm outside the vagina would have to stay alive, drip into the vagina, and then make their way up through the vaginal cavity to eventually fertilize the egg. Sperm can survive outside of the male and female for up to an hour as long as the conditions are favorable and the sperm are in semen that has not dried out.
Specific Ways to Become Pregnant Without Having Sex
In discussing "sex," we refer mostly to vaginal sex.
But there are other ways of being sexual with another person -- oral sex, anal sex, and mutual masturbation, for example. So can you get pregnant from one of these methods?
Oral Sex
Getting pregnant from oral sex is extremely unlikely. As discussed earlier, for pregnancy to occur, the semen (which contains sperm) has to come in contact with the area around the vagina. During oral sex, the penis is generally not in the vicinity of the vagina, making it difficult to get pregnant from oral sex.
