Recovery Time for Tubal Ligation

Leaving the Hospital

When you leave the hospital you will be given instructions for taking care of your body after the operation and specific instructions for driving, activity level, medication, and any further restrictions necessary.

Since you have just had your baby, you will receive general postpartum instructions. You will likely feel tired after labor and the surgery and will want to rest. The tubal ligation should not alter your postpartum recovery. Your healthcare provider will also go over any emergency symptoms that require immediate medical attention, such as fever or increasing abdominal pain.

In addition to normal postpartum body changes, you can expect to have mild tenderness, pain, and even a bruise around the tubal ligation incision site. You should expect to see your doctor for a follow-up visit about four to six weeks after the procedure.

You may begin to have sexual relations whenever you are ready. You should know that no significant or prolonged sexual problems have been linked to this procedure in any way.
