Pitocin Induction

One of the common uses of Pitocin® (oxytocin) is to help with the induction of labor. There has to be a medical reason, however, for a healthcare provider to recommend inducing labor with Pitocin. Some of these reasons include the following:
  • Rh problems (when a mother has Rh-negative blood and the baby has Rh-positive blood)
  • When the mother has gestational diabetes
  • When the mother has developed preeclampsia
  • When starting labor is in the best interest of the mother or unborn baby.
Pitocin comes as a liquid that is injected into a muscle or given as an intravenous (IV) infusion. It will be administered by a healthcare provider in a healthcare setting. The medication works by stimulating or improving uterine contractions to help with labor and delivery.
