Nestabs Uses

If you are pregnant or plan on becoming pregnant, you may consider taking Nestabs. This prescription prenatal vitamin contains many vitamins and nutrients that can benefit the increased nutritional needs of pregnant women. Children younger than age 18 should not use Nestabs, as this product contains iron in a high enough amount that it could be potentially dangerous for children.

What Is Nestabs Used For?

Nestabs® is a prescription prenatal vitamin used as a dietary supplement in women who are pregnant. The vitamin is also used as a dietary supplement before pregnancy in women who are trying to conceive and after pregnancy, particularly for women who are breastfeeding.
During pregnancy, a woman needs more of several nutrients for her overall health and the health of her unborn baby. It is especially important for a pregnant woman to get enough folic acid and iron. However, it can be difficult to get all of the needed nutrients through diet alone. Even women who eat a well-balanced diet will likely need a prenatal vitamin to fill in any nutritional gaps.
Prenatal vitamins provide a combination of vitamins and minerals specifically designed for the nutritional needs of pregnant women. There are numerous different brands, and the types and amount of minerals and vitamins can vary. Importantly, most prenatal vitamins contain folic acid, calcium, and iron, which are essential for a healthy pregnancy.
Folic acid helps reduce the risk of birth defects of the brain and spinal cord known as neural tube defects. Most prescription prenatal vitamins contain 1 mg (1000 mcg) of folic acid, while nonprescription prenatal vitamins usually contain 500 to 800 mcg. Nestabs tablets provide 1 mg of folic acid.
Folic acid is also important prior to pregnancy and during early pregnancy, including the early weeks before it is even possible to know if you are pregnant. Therefore, your healthcare provider may recommend that you take a prenatal vitamin while trying to get pregnant. In fact, because unplanned pregnancies are so common, it is a good idea for any sexually active woman who could get pregnant to take a prenatal vitamin, or at least a multivitamin with a minimum of 400 mcg of folic acid.
Iron is important for keeping the blood healthy for the mother and her baby. Too little iron can cause iron-deficiency anemia. Nestabs provides enough iron to prevent iron-deficiency anemia in most women.
Calcium is necessary for developing strong bones and teeth. The majority of prenatal vitamins, including Nestabs, do not contain enough calcium. This is because calcium is a bulky mineral, so including the recommended daily amount of calcium would make the vitamins quite large -- too large to swallow. Therefore, it is important to consume dairy products or take an additional calcium supplement during pregnancy.
In addition to other vitamins and minerals, Nestabs contain vitamin B6, which may help reduce nausea. They also contain choline, which plays a role in normal brain development.
Nestabs is available in the regular form and as Nestabs® DHA. Nestabs DHA contains the same vitamins and minerals as regular Nestabs, but also includes a gelcap containing the omega-3 fatty acid docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). DHA is important for fetal eye and brain development.
