Nestabs and Breastfeeding

Women are often advised to continue taking their prenatal vitamin, including Nestabs, while breastfeeding, as it contains important nutrients that pass through breast milk to the nursing infant. Do not take supplements, vitamins, or minerals in addition to Nestabs without first talking to your healthcare provider. However, you may need to take additional calcium to meet your daily requirements.

Can Breastfeeding Women Take Nestabs?

Breastfeeding women can take Nestabs®. It is important for breastfeeding women to get adequate nutrition so essential vitamins and nutrients can be passed from breast milk to a nursing child. It can be difficult for women to get all of the recommended nutrients from diet alone, however. Therefore, it is often recommended that women continue to take their prenatal vitamins while breastfeeding.

What Does the Research Say About Nestabs and Breastfeeding?

Many of the vitamins and minerals found in Nestabs pass through breast milk. However, this is usually a beneficial thing. Milk is the only source of vitamins and minerals for infants who are exclusively breastfed.

It is not a good idea to take too much of any particular vitamin or mineral, however. So make sure you have your healthcare provider's approval before taking additional supplements, vitamins, or minerals.

Keep in mind that prenatal vitamins usually do not contain enough calcium for most women. Nestabs only contains 200 mg of calcium, which is quite a bit less than the daily intake of 1000 mg recommended for breastfeeding women. Therefore, make sure to drink milk, eat calcium-rich foods, and take a calcium supplement in addition to your prenatal vitamin.

Talking With Your Healthcare Provider

You should discuss breastfeeding and Nestabs use with your healthcare provider. Each woman's situation is different, and you and your healthcare provider understand your situation best. After considering what you want and expect, as well as your current health situation, the two of you can make a shared decision that is right for you.
