Makena Drug Interactions

Makena Drug Interactions Explained

No drug interaction studies have been done with Makena. However, it is known that Makena increases the metabolism rate of certain liver enzymes. Since these liver enzymes metabolize (break down) certain other medications, it is possible that effect could lead to Makena drug interactions. This means that, at least theoretically, Makena may cause the body to break down certain other medications (such as the ones listed previously) too quickly, perhaps making those drugs less effective.

If it becomes clear that one of your medications is not working as well as it had in the past, your healthcare provider may need to increase the dosage of that medication to account for the effects of Makena on its metabolism.

Of course, these types of interactions are most likely to be problematic when they involve drugs that are very important or very "touchy" in terms of dosage. For instance, a small change in nicotine metabolism is unlikely to cause any problems. However, a small change in the metabolism of clozapine (an antipsychotic medication) or theophylline (an asthma medication) could lead to serious problems.

Final Thoughts

It is possible that not all drug interactions with Makena were discussed in this article. Therefore, you should talk with your pharmacist or healthcare provider about any specific interactions that may apply to you.
