Pregnancy Home > Generic Prepidil

Although there are no patents preventing a manufacturer from making a generic Prepidil (dinoprostone vaginal gel), no generic versions of this medicine are available at this time. It is not known why this is the case; however, the demand for Prepidil may be so small that it may not be profitable for a manufacturer to make a generic version.

Can I Buy Generic Prepidil?

Prepidil® (dinoprostone vaginal gel) is a prescription medication used in pregnant women to soften and dilate the cervix before labor and delivery. This is known as cervical ripening.
Prepidil is made by Pharmacia and Upjohn Company, a division of Pfizer, Inc. Currently, the medication is not available in a generic version.

When Will a Generic Version Be Available?

It is unclear why a generic version of Prepidil is not currently available. The medication is not protected by patents, so a manufacturer could make a generic version. However, at this time, no generic manufacturers have chosen to do this.
It could be that the demand for the medication is too small to make it profitable for a company to manufacture generic Prepidil. However, because it is unknown why a generic version is not available yet, it is impossible to predict when, or if, generic Prepidil will become available.

Is Dinoprostone a Generic Form of Prepidil?

No -- dinoprostone is the active ingredient in Prepidil, not a generic version of it. What can be confusing is that the active ingredient of a drug is often referred to as the "generic name."
The generic name is different from a generic version of a medicine. In order for there to be a generic version, the original medicine must have gone off-patent and another company besides the original manufacturer must make the product.
