In addition to medicines, several other treatment options are available for pregnancy headaches. Some women might find temporary headache relief by applying cold packs to the head or by pressing on the bulging artery found in front of the ear on the painful side of the head. Stress management techniques, such as relaxation and massage, can also help limit pain. Make sure to talk with your healthcare provider before trying any alternative treatments for headaches.
Is This a Headache or Something More Serious? Many things can cause a headache during pregnancy, and most of these are not serious. However, these headaches may also be a signal that there is a problem. Therefore, you should always call your healthcare provider if you have a headache that is:
- In a different location from previous headaches
- Greater in severity than previous headaches
- Accompanied by a fever or stiff neck
- Accompanied by blurry vision.
You should also call your healthcare provider if the headache does not get better after a couple of hours or seems to return day after day.
