When you are 27 weeks pregnant, your baby's brain embarks on a period of rapid growth. The forebrain grows to cover the rest of the brain, resulting in some important brain development.
During week 27 of pregnancy, your baby's muscle coordination will allow him or her to start thumb sucking. This activity calms the baby and strengthens cheek and jaw muscles for nursing.
Other fetal development that is occurring when you are 27 weeks pregnant includes the following:
- The network of nerves to the ear is completed
- The baby takes some breaths, and although breathing in water, not air, it is good practice for the lungs
- Eyelids begin to open, and the retinas begin to form
- Your baby may be able to recognize your voice and your partner's voice.
At 27 weeks pregnant, your uterus is moving closer to your rib cage, making it difficult for your lungs to fully expand; however, your baby is not lacking oxygen. The pregnancy hormones have helped you out -- they are causing your circulatory system to work more efficiently, pumping more oxygen- and nutrient-rich blood to you and your baby. To help alleviate shortness of breath, slow down, reduce stress, and decrease your activity.
Other changes you may notice in your body during week 27 of pregnancy include the following:
- You will now weigh 16 to 22 pounds more than your pre-pregnancy weight.
- Your balance and mobility may be changing as you grow larger. You may feel as if you are carrying a bowling ball out in front of you!
- Stretch marks may become visible as your uterus continues to expand.
- The placenta is producing more hormones, including progesterone, which is vital in helping your uterine muscles relax.
