Ultrasound at 20 Weeks Pregnant

Your healthcare provider may recommend that you have an ultrasound -- a diagnostic test that uses sound waves to create an image -- around the time you are 18 to 22 weeks pregnant. Your doctor can use an ultrasound to determine the size and position of the fetus, as well as any structural abnormalities of bones and organs that are visible by this time.

Depending on the position of the fetus, the ultrasound may reveal the sex of the baby. The umbilical cord, placenta, and amniotic fluid may also be examined.
