Pregnancy Home > Generic PreferaOB

As a type of dietary supplement, PreferaOB does not have to undergo certain tests by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. This means that no studies are done to determine if a generic product is equivalent to the brand-name product. Therefore, technically, no generic PreferaOB products are available at this time.

Can I Buy Generic PreferaOB?

PreferaOB® is a brand of vitamins specially formulated for women who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or trying to conceive. These vitamins are available only with a prescription.
PreferaOB vitamins are made by Alaven Pharmaceutical, LLC. Technically, a generic version of PreferaOB is not available.

When Will a Generic Version Be Available?

All generic medications must undergo certain tests to compare them to brand-name medications. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) then looks at these tests to decide if the generics are equivalent to the brand-name medications and assigns an "equivalence rating" to each one. These ratings are used by pharmacists to determine which generic products are considered equivalent to brand-name products.
However, the FDA classifies prenatal vitamins as dietary supplements, not prescription medications. Dietary supplements do not require FDA approval.
Because prenatal vitamins do not need FDA approval, the FDA does not give them equivalence ratings. As a result, technically, no generic prenatal vitamin is equivalent to any brand-name prenatal vitamin, including PreferaOB.
