Besides Laparoscopy, What Are the Alternatives?
Having an ectopic pregnancy is a very serious medical condition that requires either medical or surgical treatment. If left untreated, an ectopic pregnancy can result in loss of life.
In certain situations, medications can be used to treat an ectopic pregnancy. But only certain patients are candidates for medication. If your condition is not treatable with medications, then surgery is necessary.
An alternative to laparoscopic surgery is having major abdominal surgery called a laparotomy. However, this alternative carries the same risks as laparoscopic surgery, and requires a much longer period to recover from, and causes more pain and discomfort. Therefore, when laparoscopic surgery is possible, diagnosis and treatment can be achieved through this at a lower risk and less discomfort.
If you have any questions about possible alternatives for your particular situation, you should discuss the different methods available for surgery with your doctor and decide which one, if any, is right for you.
