Ectopic Pregnancy and Alternatives to Laparoscopic Surgery
Having an ectopic pregnancy is a serious medical condition that requires either medical or surgical treatment. If left untreated, an ectopic pregnancy can result in loss of life.
In certain situations, medications can be used to treat an ectopic pregnancy. However, medication is right only for certain women. If your condition is not treatable with medications, surgery is necessary.
An alternative to laparoscopic surgery is major abdominal surgery, called a laparotomy. However, this alternative carries the same risks as laparoscopic surgery, requires a longer recovery period, and causes more pain and discomfort. Therefore, when laparoscopic surgery is possible, ectopic pregnancy diagnosis and treatment can be achieved through this at a lower risk and with less discomfort.
If you have any questions about possible alternatives in your particular situation, discuss the different methods available with your healthcare provider and decide which one, if any, is right for you.
