Gesticare Uses

How Does Gesticare Work?

Gesticare contains a variety of different vitamins and minerals. These nutrients are important for a healthy pregnancy, and many pregnant women may not get enough of these nutrients, for various reasons. Probably most importantly, this prenatal vitamin contains folic acid, which is important to prevent certain birth defects, such as spina bifida. It also contains iron, calcium, and various other vitamins and minerals.
Unlike other prenatal vitamins, Gesticare is specially designed to improve the absorption of calcium and iron. These two minerals interact with each other and (if taken at the same time) decrease each other's absorption. To avoid this problem, the iron in Gesticare is immediate-release (is dissolved in the stomach), while the calcium is specially coated to dissolve in the small intestine.

Using Gesticare in Children, Men, or the Elderly

Gesticare is typically not recommended for children, men, or the elderly. Sometimes, prenatal vitamins are prescribed in place of regular vitamins in order to get them covered by insurance or Medicaid (although many insurance companies and Medicaid programs have caught on to this practice and now restrict prenatal vitamin coverage to pregnant women only). Many prenatal vitamins contain iron in doses that are too high for children.

Off-Label Uses

On occasion, your healthcare provider may recommend Gesticare for something other than the conditions discussed in this article.
People often wonder if taking prenatal vitamins may be helpful for hair growth. Although pregnant women often have fuller, thicker hair that grows faster, this is due to hormones, not their prenatal vitamins. It is unlikely that prenatal vitamins will help with hair growth (or that they would be any better than a regular multivitamin for this use).
