What Is Citracal Prenatal + DHA Used For?
Citracal
® Prenatal +
DHA is a
prescription prenatal vitamin that is specifically designed for pregnant women.
Prenatal vitamins are like "nutrition insurance," because they fill in any nutritional gaps in a pregnant woman's diet. Even women who usually eat a well-balanced and nutritional diet before pregnancy may have problems getting all the nutrition they need during pregnancy, due to morning sickness, food aversions, or other problems.
Citracal Prenatal + DHA products are also useful for women trying to conceive or for use after childbirth (especially for women who choose to breastfeed). Because it is important to get enough
folic acid prior to pregnancy and during early pregnancy (including the early weeks before you even know you are pregnant), your healthcare provider may recommend that you take a prenatal vitamin while trying to get pregnant. In fact, because so many pregnancies are unplanned, it is a good idea for any sexually active woman of reproductive age to take a prenatal vitamin (or at least a multivitamin with a minimum of 400 mcg of folic acid).
Citracal Prenatal + DHA prenatal vitamins come in two different forms:
- Regular Citracal Prenatal + DHA (with 27 mg of iron per dose)
- Citracal Prenatal 90 + DHA (with 90 mg of iron per dose).
Unless there is a reason you need more iron (such as if you have anemia), the regular form with less iron is probably best, as it is easier on the stomach and less likely to cause
constipation.
Citracal Prenatal + DHA products have been discontinued by the manufacturer. They have been replaced by the Citranatal line of products. The Citranatal products are very similar to Citracal Prenatal + DHA products but have slight differences. There are now more formulations to choose from, and the formulations no longer include
vitamin A and vitamin B
12.
