Citracal Prenatal + DHA Overdose

As with any other vitamin, it is possible to overdose on Citracal Prenatal + DHA. Overdose effects will depend on several factors, such as how much Citracal Prenatal + DHA was taken and whether it was taken with other substances. Although many of the symptoms of a Citracal Prenatal + DHA overdose are not life threatening, dangerous side effects are possible due to the iron content in the vitamin. Symptoms of iron poisoning may include seizures, vomiting, and a rapid heart rate.

An Introduction to Citracal Prenatal + DHA Overdose

Citracal® Prenatal + DHA and Citracal Prenatal 90 + DHA are prescription prenatal vitamins that contain iron. As with any other vitamin (especially iron-containing vitamins), it is possible to take too much Citracal Prenatal + DHA. The specific effects of a Citracal Prenatal + DHA overdose can vary depending on a number of factors, including the Citracal Prenatal + DHA dosage and whether it was taken with any other substances or medicines.

Dangerous Citracal Prenatal + DHA Overdose Effects

An overdose with a
prenatal vitamin is likely to cause annoying symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or constipation. Fortunately, these are not usually life-threatening problems. However, Citracal Prenatal + DHA products contain iron, and taking too much iron can be very dangerous (especially for young children). Symptoms of iron poisoning may include:

  • Fever and chills
  • Blue lips and fingernails
  • Pale skin
  • Dehydration
  • Flushing
  • Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia)
  • Low blood pressure (hypotension)
  • A rapid heart rate (tachycardia)
  • Fluid in the lungs
  • Diarrhea
  • Black and, possibly, bloody stools
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Metallic taste in the mouth
  • Drowsiness
  • Dizziness
  • Headaches
  • Seizures
  • Coma.

Because children cannot handle much iron, Citracal Prenatal + DHA prenatal vitamins should be stored out of the reach of children.
