C-section Risks -- Bladder and Urinary Tract Injury
The ureters are the tubes that carry urine from the kidney to the bladder. Injuries to the bladder and ureters are rare. They include blockage, perforation, and burn injuries, which can be caused by the instruments used during the surgery. In most cases, these are repaired during surgery, and a bladder catheter may be needed for 7 to 10 days.
You may also be given antibiotics. At times, additional surgery is needed to place thin tubes, called stents, in the ureters. Sometimes, an injury may not appear at the time of the operation, but may show up later. This may require another surgery to repair the damage.
