Cervidil Medication

Available by prescription only, Cervidil® (dinoprostone vaginal insert) is a medication prescribed to prepare the cervix for labor and delivery in women who have a medical reason to be induced. This medicine comes in the form of a vaginal insert that is placed high in the vagina, near the cervix.

Medication is slowly released from the Cervidil insert over a 12-hour period. It contains a manufactured (synthetic) version of a naturally occurring hormone in the body that is needed to help prepare the cervix for childbirth. Specifically, Cervidil helps to relax and soften the cervix to allow it to dilate for the baby to pass through.

Although most women tolerate the drug well, Cervidil can cause side effects. Some of the most common reactions include fetal distress and strong uterine contractions.
