If a pregnant woman is near the time of delivery and has a medical reason to induce labor, Cervidil® (dinoprostone vaginal insert) may be used to help "ripen" the cervix. This means that the medication helps to relax and soften the cervix, allowing it to dilate so the baby can pass through.
Cervidil comes as a vaginal insert that is placed high in the vagina near the cervix. It is administered by a healthcare provider in a hospital setting. The insert can be left in until active labor begins, but for no longer than 12 hours.
Some reasons a healthcare provider may recommend Cervidil to induce labor include:
- Being overdue (beyond 41 weeks pregnant)
- Pregnancy-induced high blood pressure (hypertension)
- Your health or your baby's health is at risk.
