Cervidil Induction of Labor

A healthcare provider may prescribe Cervidil® (dinoprostone vaginal insert) for labor induction in women who are near the time of delivery and have a medical reason to be induced. The medication comes in the form of a vaginal insert that is placed near the cervix. It works by relaxing and softening the cervix ("ripening") so the baby can pass through.

There must be a medical reason that a woman needs to receive Cervidil to have labor induced. Some of these reasons may include:

  • Labor is not progressing as expected
  • Your health is at risk
  • Your baby's health is at risk.

The most common reasons for induction include being overdue (beyond 41 weeks pregnant) and having pregnancy-induced hypertension (high blood pressure).
